Toothbrushing – children 0-6 years

Most parents know that it’s important to brush their children’s teeth, but many don’t know how to properly brush their teeth or when to start. Here are some tips on how to brush your child’s teeth, from infancy to age six.  

When to start brushing: You can start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as they get their first tooth. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and water. You can also use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.  

How to brush: Use gentle circular motions and focus on the gum line. Be sure to brush the front, top, and back of each tooth. Don’t forget to brush your child’s tongue (or have them do it themselves)! How often to brush: Children should brush their teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and at night. If your child eats or drinks anything sugary, they should brush their teeth afterward.  

Make it fun: Brushing your child’s teeth doesn’t have to be a chore. Make it fun by singing songs, letting them use an electric toothbrush, or letting them brush your teeth.

3. Help your child to hold the toothbrush correctly. Place the toothbrush against the teeth at a 45-degree angle.  

4. Use gentle circular motions to brush the teeth. Be sure to brush the front, back and top of the teeth. 

5. Use a gentle back and forth motion to brush the tongue (this helps remove bacteria that can cause bad breath).  

6. Spit the toothpaste out after brushing.  

7. Rinse the toothbrush with water.  

8. Repeat these steps for the other teeth. 

9. Help your child floss their teeth once a day.  

10. Visit the dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.  

Brushing your child’s teeth twice a day is the best way to keep their teeth healthy. If you can make toothbrushing a fun and positive experience, your child is more likely to continue this healthy habit into adulthood.
